Returning to the corporate world after having my daughter was mortifying. To say I had lost my voice was an understatement. And I honestly feared I might never get it back.

Remembering who you are after time of work for whatever reason out can be tough.

Take motherhood for example - there are so many pressurse to be the perfect parent that when you return to work, your roles get all muddled up. Are you mum in the mornings and at bedtime and career woman during the day? What happens when your child get sick. Or if you work part time?

And what if you’ve had a leave of absence following redundancy? Maybe you’ve struggled to find work, unsure of what you want to do. Maybe you’ve decided to embark on a new career but you’ve been out of office life for so long, you’re not sure who you’re supposed to be anymore.

If you’ve gone through a major life change, it’s pretty safe to assume things aren’t going to return to normal - or they might but that normal will be a new version and that’s cool. Accepting that, I believe is half the battle.

For me that meant accepting that scaling the corporate ladder was no longer for me. My priorities had changed but that didn’t make me any less ambitious. I just need to rethink how I could be successful in a different way and I really wanted to be. Not who I felt others expected me to be.

It’s also really important to re-connect with your purpose, for example before you had children. Or it could be about putting that to bed and igniting a new sense of meaning.

🏆First up I’d like to thank the corporate machine that once employed me and made it impossible for me to live up to their expectations of doing 5 days work in 3 after having a baby.

🫖 Big up to Yorkshire Tea for keeping me hydrated in the early days, as I sat for hours staring at my laptop, praying work would come in.

🤯A massive cheers to the countless difficult clients who, in the early days, pushed me to my limited because I wasn’t strong enough to set boundaries. Without you, I would never have had panic attacks, making me realise I DON’T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS CRAP

One of the reasons I love being a storyteller is because stories make our world bigger.

They allow us to get to know people we will never meet, opening our eyes and educating us to be better humans.

Stories help us feel less alone in our experiences like invisible bonds connecting us around the world. with people who, on paper are different to us, but under the surface are exactly the same.

And storytelling give us a space to celebrate these differences in a way that doesn’t require money or resources. Just a voice.

But sadly, even that most basic of rights, our right to a voice, is a privilege not afforded to all.

I’m sure you’ll have had times when you feel you’re voice has been silenced, based on your gender (I know I have). Or you’ve felt unable to use your voice for fear of discrimination or attack. This is the reality of the world we live in. But it doesn’t have to be.

This years International Women’s Day is all about wrapping our arms around a collective narrative and taking action to drive change to create an inclusive world for all - where all voices matter.

Yes, this fight needs to be more than something we just write about - but our words do matter and hold weight.

Here are some ideas of how you can use your words to drive action. You can get a more detailed run down in today’s podcast (just search The Everyday Storyteller wherever you normally listen to podcasts).

🎉 Celebrate the achievements of women you care about and who inspire you

📣 Use your voice to share your own experiences and what these have taught you in terms of being part of the solution, not the problem.

🙋‍♀️Tell your story about what International Women’s Day and embracing equity means to you personally;

👯‍♀️ Use stories to raise awareness of groups or movements you are part of

👄 And speak out. When you see something you know isn’t right, use your words to call it. And invite others to stand behind you. We are all in this together.

As a toddler, my daughter saw a boy who wasn't there on our stairs. Now, whenever I hear a ghost story, I always take the time to listen rather than immediately dismiss it as codswallop.

Believer or sceptic, ghost stories can teach us a fair amount about storytelling.

Like the power of shared experiences to attract like-minded people (customers?).

And why what we're all seeking, as humans, is meaning. And how, if we can tap into this, we can build stronger, more connected relationships, which = sales = money.

Customer case studies, testimonials, success stories.

Whatever you call them, if you want to engage potential customers and give them a clear reason to buy from you, you really need to be sharing them.

And here’s why:

Every time you share a positive experience from your customer you are:

* Providing invaluable credibility about the value you provide to others - that’s unbeatable even by the very best sales copy or fanciest website.

* Reinforcing your relationship with your customer, building loyalty and making it more likely they will tell others about you.

* Reducing the fear factor for potential customers wanting to work with you or buy your products. Seeing and FEELING how others have been impacted by what you do, gives customers confidence in their decision making and can often push them over the fence to buy from you.
